Why are sizes soo important to girls?

I overhead a friend saying she felt disillusioned when she was told that she was 2 sizes bigger in her wedding dress than her regular street clothes... she mentioned she was embarrassed & shocked and was not able accept the size. The bridal assistant had to explain to her that the 'size 10' were true to her measurements and that every designer varies in size. And even then she walked out highly disappointed because of the SIZE.

My question is ... Why does the actual number on a piece of clothing mean sooo much to us GIRLS?

Formal wear is not very forgiving to say the least. They run much smaller than regular street clothes. The actual size on each dress is determined by brand, designer and pattern maker. They come up with their own measurements by what they feel the size and label of their clothing should be.

Sooo I say...

Do NOT look at the size, do NOT care about the size, do NOT worry about the size.
Worry about your perfect dress and how YOU feel in it! THATS what is most important, the SIZE is nothing but a Number!

  1. You can always let the customer know you can switch the tag if that makes them feel better... True designers have their own version what a 2,4, etc is.. I know that from working with a maternity designer.

  2. There is a wonderful book I'm trying to finish called Survival of the Prettiest: The Science of Beauty. It takes a deeper look into why we women think the way we do & behave the way we do in regards to our appearance. And why men react the way they do to certain women. Honestly, in my fashion experience it's not the size, it's how it fits the girl....and you don't have to be a twig to look fabulous in the *right* dress. To me, dress sizes are a disillusionment, but a reality of fashion.

  3. Thanks for sharing this post. To me, size is just a number (just like age!)
